How Often Should You Groom a Doodle?
Doodles are some of the sweetest dogs we see at Jazz's Wonderland, and their coats are some of the most work. Goldendoodles, Labradoodles and Bernedoodles usually have a curly or wavy coat that keeps growing and tangles easily. Left alone, it mats close to the skin, which is uncomfortable for your dog and harder to fix.
The short answer: every 4 to 8 weeks
Most Doodles do best with a full professional groom every 4 to 8 weeks. Dogs kept in a longer "teddy bear" style usually need to come in closer to every 4 weeks. A shorter cut can stretch toward 8.
Signs your Doodle is due
Hair is covering their eyes
You feel small knots behind the ears, under the collar or in the armpits
The paws look like slippers and they're slipping on hard floors
The coat looks fuzzy and flat instead of fluffy
Between grooms
Brush a few times a week with a slicker brush, then go back over with a metal comb. If the comb catches, there's a tangle starting. Pay extra attention to the ears, the collar line, the legs and the tail. After baths or swims in the Florida heat, make sure the coat dries all the way, because damp curls mat fast.
Matted already?
It happens. Mats can take extra time to work out, and sometimes a shorter cut is the kindest option for your dog's comfort. Text us a photo at 352-570-0887 and we'll give you an idea of what to expect before the appointment.
